Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Our thoughts and interpretations of situations have a great impact on how we feel and therefore how we act. CBT offers specific strategies to become aware of our ways of thinking and behaving and to make them more adaptive in order to feel better.

The way we think about ourselves and the world around us has a lot of influence on how we feel and how we act or react in certain situations. For example, if you see friends having lunch together, how would you feel? How you feel will depend on how you interpret the situation.

Scenario 1:

You think: "It was not planned, they ran into each other" or "They thought I had other lunch plans"

You feel: Happy or Neutral

You do: You ask them if you can join them

Scenario 2:

You think: "They did not invite me" which could lead to "They don't like me", "I don't fit in", etc.

You feel: Sad, Rejected, Bitter

You do: You go seat somewhere else by yourself, which makes you feel even sadder and might send the message to them that you don't want to be with them which creates a negative cycle.

The goal of the therapy is to break the negative cycle by making you aware of your own ways of thinking and teach you common ways people misinterpret certain situations. In the therapy, we work on specific tools and techniques to teach you how to think if a more adaptive way, which in turn will have a very positive impact on the way you feel and how you live your life. We also work on problem solving for difficulties in your life and decide together on concrete changes that would make your life easier and more pleasant. The goal is to make you your own therapist by giving you a toolbox that you can use in many different situations. This is why this is a relatively short-term therapy. We work together to set specific goals and find strategies to reach your optimal potential.

Couple and Family Therapy

The goal of Systemic Family Therapy is to help family members communicate better, understand each other better, and get along in the best way possible. Research indicates that family therapy is as effective, and in some cases more effective than individual treatments for many issues. The family and the therapist work together to establish common goals for the therapy. Goals often involve improving relationships between family members, improving communication, increasing quality time and reducing feelings of sadness and anger.
